Abstract

1,052,342. Turmeric flavourings and colourings. GRIFFITH LABORATORIES Ltd. Sept. 17, 1964 [Sept. 18, 1963], No. 38039/64. Heading A2B. In order to concentrate the colouring matter of, and to remove the bitter principle, turmeric is extracted by an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent, notably hexane, which dissolves the essential oil of the turmeric but not the coloured oleoresin, and the essential oil-containing extract is separated from the coloured residue. The process is applicable to natural turmeric or to a turmeric extract obtained by extracting with a low boiling point such as methyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, ethylene dichloride or trichlorethylene.
