If an aerated liquid be subjected to sonic (or ultra sonic) vibrations while also being maintained under an external pressure above the saturation pressure, degassing is progressively slowed and, with further increase of the external pressure, eventually halted and the effect reversed so that dissolution of gas in the liquid is promoted. The external pressure must be selected so that during the negative component of the sonic pressure wave the resultant pressure on the liquid is still above the saturation pressure; an external pressure of 2-5 atmospheres is suggested. As shown liquid from a reservoir 1 is subjected to pressure by a pump 2, gas is injected or induced into it at 3, and the aerated liquid is subjected to sonic vibrations at 4.
