Abstract

105,200. Royal Typewriter Co., (Assignees of Hess, E. B.). April 13, 1916, [Convention date]. Platen-roller couplings.-A clutch for coupling the platen of a typewriter to the line-spacing wheel comprises two relatively movable members formed with fine teeth or ridges which are arranged so that engagement of the two sets of teeth is effected gradually and in the direction of the longitudinal edges of the teeth. As shown, a sliding disk E is formed with an inclined flange or a number of inclined lugs e' provided with fine teeth e<2> adapted to engage a ring of horizontal teeth f formed on a cup F, which is loose on the platen shaft C and is secured to the line-spacing wheel G. The disk can slide on the platen hub b<1> and is formed with a tongue e engaging a guide-slot c' in the platen shaft. The disk is provided with pins D, which are mounted to slide in the platen end B and are pressed outwards by springs d<2>, the clutch members being normally in engagement. The disk is pushed inwards to release the platen, by means of a knob K secured to a hub k, which is mounted in the platen knob I and is secured to a spindle L, which passes along the platen shaft and engages the tongue e on the disk.
