Abstract
1,051,386. Thermal responsive device. STANDARD-THOMSON CORPORATION. March 22, 1965 [March 27, 1964], No. 12069/65. Heading G1D. An actuating device more particularly a thermal responsive device, of the type having a rigid housing 10 with a wall having an opening therethrough, an axially movable shaft 14 extending into the housing through the opening in said wall, pressure material 34 within the housing operable upon the shaft for movement thereof comprising lubrication means 20 adjacent the shaft, pressure responsive operater means 22 adjacent the lubrication means for operation thereof, the pressure responsive operater means being actuated by the pressure material. The housing 10 comprises a main portion 11 and an end portion 12 through which the shaft extends. Within the end portion 12 is a cup-shaped retainer or lubricant reservoir 18 in which is a body 20 of porous spongy material forming a wick carrying a quantity of lubricant material. Extending into the cup-shaped retainer is a piston 22 with a collar 24 to limit the movement of the piston. The actuater rod 14 is surrounded at its lower end by an elastomeric boot 30 which forms a seal between the upper and lower portions of the container. Between the main portion 11 and the boot 30 is a body of pressure producing material 34 which in the embodiment described is thermally responsive material. As the pressure of the body 34 increases the actuater rod 14 is moved outwards and the piston 22 presses on the wick 20 to lubricate the rod.
