Aluminium and iron nitrides are obtained in a special electric furnace by blowing a mixture of argillaceous earth, or iron oxide, and soot or coaldust, into an arc in nitrogen. Calcium cyanamide; barium cyanide. - These are prepared in a similar manner from lime and baryta.
