Abstract
1,050,940. Charging open hearth furnaces. MAERZ OFENBAU A.G. and POHLIGHECKEL-BLEICHERT VEREINIGTE MASCHINENFABRIKEN A.G. March 18. 1965 [March 18, 19641. No. 11638/65. Heading F4B. Charging apparatus for an open hearth furnace 1 comprises a platform 7 running transversely of the furnace and carrying a reciprocating trough 2 mounted on a chassis 4 reversibly driven towards the furnace by a chain 6 and rollers 5, and a charge container 9 transferable from a truck 14 by a crab 15 to a tipping device 10 on the platform 7. In operation, a flap 13 on container 9 is unlocked, said container is tilted about pivot 11 by hydraulic cylinder 12 discharging some of its contents into trough 2 which is then reciprocated. As charge material approaches its forward end, the trough 2 is inserted in the furnace, traversed slowly thereacross and back again, the charge deposited on the forward stroke protecting said trough from radiation from the furnace hearth. The forward end of the trough can be tilted upwardly, its front sides cut away, or its base cut away obliquely, Figs. 2-4 (not shown), to facilitate lateral distribution of the charge.
