1,050,861. Strengthening glass articles. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 14, 1965 [Jan. 17, 1964], No. 1681/65. Heading C1M. An article of a glass consisting mainly of sodium and/or lithium aluminosilicate which contains at least 5% by weight of aluminium oxide and not more than 20% of other glassforming components, is strengthened by replacement of sodium and/or lithium ions by potassium ions by contacting the article at a temperature of at least 500‹ C. and at least 75‹ C. below the annealing temperature of the glass with a melt containing potassium nitrite to which stannic oxide, metallic tin or metallic aluminium has been added. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 917,388.
