Abstract

In a marine propulsion installation at least one gas turbine 6 and a steam turbine 21, operating in a combined cycle, provide the forward drive, at least one gas turbine 11 and a steam turbine 23 provide the reverse drive, a post-combustion chamber 19 is arranged upstream of the steam generator 20 and the steam circuit is used during the forward drive for placing the reverse drive turbine under vacuum. The gas generator consists of a compressor 1 having adjustable bladings 2, starter motor 3, combustion chamber 5 and gas turbine 4. A post-combustion burner 29 may be provided. Turbine 6, which has completely closable bladings 7, drives shaft 10 through pinion 8 and tooth wheel 9. Turbine exhaust gases are either fed through a duct 18 to the ship's chimney or through post-combustion chamber 19 to generator 20. Steam is supplied through valve 30 to turbine 21 which drives wheel 9 through pinion 22. Reverse-motion turbine 23 is directly coupled to pinion 22 and during reverse-motion is fed with steam through a valve 31 and pipe 25. The reversemotion gas turbine 11 is normally kept at no-load condition by connecting its discharge through valve 33 and duct 12 to steam condensor 13 and feeding steam through valve 32 to all its valves and fluidtight boxes. For reverse-motion valves 32, 33 are closed and valves 15, 16 opened to deliver exhaust gas from turbine 4. Turbine 11 is restored to no-load conditions by feeding steam through duct 14 to ejector 17 and then restoring connection with condenser 13. The reverse-motion turbine 23 is put in the no-load condition during forward motion by means of pipe 24. In another embodiment a reverse-motion gas turbine 27, Fig. 2 (not shown) is connected to pinion 8 through a releasable coupling 28. In modifications chamber 19 and boiler 20 may be replaced by a boiler with built-in burner, the combined gas-steam cycle may be used for the reverse-motion turbines and the gas generator may consist of one or more free-piston gas generators.
