Cigarette groups consisting of tobacco components and mouth-piece components are tested to distinguish faulty from acceptable groups, the faulty groups moved into a path different from that traversed by the acceptable groups and the component parts of the faulty groups are separated whilst the groups are moving in the different path. Cigarette lengths T1 and T2 from a cigarette making machine 63 are combined on a drum 69 with double length filters F cut from rods R issuing from a magazine 70 and the groups wrapped with a connector sheet B on a drum 83, all in known manner. The groups are tested on a drum 84, which may be as described in Specifications 1,048,652, 1,048,661, 1,048,663 and 1,048,660 and faulty groups are rejected downwardly to a separating device 96 where the components are separated. The device 96 may be as described in Specifications 1,050,431 and 1,050,433. Incipiently faulty groups are rendered positively faulty by an incising device 89 as described in Specifications 1,048,656, 1,048,664, 1,048,665 and 1,048,662. Satisfactory groups are conveyed via a cutting drum and inverting drum 86 to a take-off belt 87.
