Abstract
1,050,163. Converter hoods; waste heat steam generators. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. Aug. 11, 1964 [Aug. 13, 1963], No. 32741/64. Headings F4A, F4B, F4J and F4X. A hood 22 with an open inlet end disposed above a steel converter 10, to receive gaseous effluent therefrom is lined with steam generating tubes, covered adjacent the inlet end with a protective lining of aluminium bonded to the tubes and outer removable splash plates formed of nodular cast iron. The exhaust gases from the converter 10 pass through the hood 22 wherein they are burnt with air drawn in through the hood inlet and also provided through the air distribution system 26. The inner surface of the hood is lined with steamgenerating tubes 44, 44a connected into the circuit of a controlled circulation steam generator. Water from drum 28 passes through conduit 32 to pump 34 to be fed through conduits 42, 51 and headers 40, 48 to the steam generating tubes 44, 44a, the steam generated passing back to drum 28 through headers 52, 49 and conduits 54, 54a. The tubes 44a form part of the inner wall of a removable panel 46 to allow access to the converter 10. To protect the tubes 44 adjacent the hood inlet from molten metal splatterings they are covered with sleeves 144 of aluminium (Fig. 2, not shown) and a layer of replaceable nodular cast iron splash plates 146 fastened by studs 150 to a backing strip 152 covered by insulation 160 and skin casing 70. In a second embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown), the plates 146<SP>1</SP> are formed with lugs 164 extending either side of the tubes 44, the tubes and plates being interbonded by aluminium 144<SP>1</SP> poured whilst molten into the space between.
