Cylinder machines; gripper mechanism. -In an oscillat in g - cylinder printing-machine of the kind described in Specification 17820/99, in which the grippers close upon the sheet just after the cylinder has begun its forward movement, the grippers are actuated by mechanism which causes them to close gradually, so that they slide on the front margin of the sheet with a tendency to smooth it out and lower it towards the front stop, the grippers being fully closed when the acceleration of the cylinder, although small, has become regular. The grippers 9 are constructed so that a line joining their points with their axis of rotation forms an acute angle with the feed-table 8, and are closed by a spring (not shown) attached to the arm 19, the closing being controlled by the engagement of a roller 15 on the arm 19 with a cam 16 carried by a lever 10, which is oscillated by a connexion with the driving-shaft of the machine. When the cylinder is at rest, the grippers 9 overhang the front margin of the sheet on the feed-table and are held open by the cam 16, which is then in its raised position. When the cylinder commences its forward rotation, the cam 16 is lowered, and the grippers are closed gradually by the spring.
