Abstract

1,049,857. Semi-conductor sawtooth generating circuits. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 27, 1963 [Sept. 4, 1962], No. 33778/62. Heading H3T. In a sawtooth generator comprising a transistor in series with an inductor, the voltage across the transistor during the flyback period is reduced by connecting a silicon controlled rectifier in the circuit. In the line timebase circuit shown for a television receiver, the deflection coils L are connected in series with a transistor TR1 and a controlled rectifier SCR1 across a D.C. supply between terminals 2, 4. Control pulses are fed to terminal 1 and passed by emitter followers TR2, TR3 to switch on TR1 and SCR1, thus giving a linear rise of current in the coils L. TR1 is turned off at the end of each pulse at 1 so that the circuit L, C executes a half-cycle of oscillation during the flyback period, energy being returned to the supply by the efficiency diode D1 SCR1 becomes non-conductive when its anode current falls to a sufficiently low level. Resistors R4, R5 arrange that the flyback voltage divides between SCR1 and TR1 in the ratio 10: 1. The control voltage for SCR1 is limited by a Zener diode ZD1. TR1 may be replaced by an oppositely connected PNP transistor if the control pulses are coupled to the base by a transformer.
