Abstract

A process for the purification of terephathalic acid comprises dissolving the terephthalic acid in liquid methanol at 130 DEG to 175 DEG C., removing any undissolved solid materials, and separating the crystals of purified terephthalic acid that result on cooling of the methanolic solution. The purification takes place under autogenous pressures, e.g. 8 to 24 atmospheres and saturated methanolic solutions are preferably used. The terephthalic acid used may be prepared from p-xylene and may contain p-carboxybenzaldehyde as an impurity.
