Abstract
1,049,592. Injection moulding. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. April 2, 1964 [April 11, 1963], No. 13711/64. Heading B5A. Preformed thermoplastic inserts 50 are secured within a mould cavity and a compatible thermoplastic material injected to fill the interstices between the inserts so as to weld them into an integral article. The inserts may be held in place in the mould cavity by vacuum holding means 46, 47 (Fig. 2, not shown) or by adhesives or clips. The invention enables large articles to be injection moulded without requiring unduly high mould clamping pressures. In one example (Fig. 5) each insert comprises a side wall 51, base portion 52 and lip 53. Plastic material is injected through a nozzle 43 and along channels 57a, 56a. In a modification (Fig. 7, not shown) the portions 52 are dispensed with, the entire base 66 being injection moulded. In Fig. 8 (not shown) a base insert 72 is used, separate from the side wall inserts 71. Material is injected through a nozzle 93 and runners 94 (see Fig. 9, not shown). In Fig. 10 (not shown) the preformed inserts 102 are part-cylindrical.
