Abstract
A bushing for the production of glass fibres includes a glass contacting portion of an alloy containing from 10 to 50% by weight of gold. Preferably an alloy of gold and platinum is used. The bushings may be wholly of the alloy or only the tips, the remainder being, for example, of Pt-Rh alloy, 90% Pt-10% Rh, to which the tips may be welded. For high strength glasses such as, in percentages by weight, SiO2 58.52; Al2O3 26.21; CaO 10.23; MgO 2.61; TiO2 2.43, forming temperature 2600-2700 DEG F., the alloy contains 10-20% gold. For "E" glass, SiO2 54.4; Al2O3 13.4; CaO 17.7; MgO 4.4; B2O3, 8.5, F2 0.2, Na2O 0.7, TiO2 0.5, Fe2O3, forming temperature about 2300 DEG F., the alloy contains less than 50, preferably 30% gold and for a glass SiO2 63.7; Na2O 13.5; B2O3 7.8; Al2O3 4.4; Fe2O3 0.1 TiO2 4.8; ZrO2 0.03; Fe 1.4; CaO 2.3; MgO 1.7; K2O 0.7, forming temperature 1950-2050 DEG F., the alloy contains 50% gold.
