Abstract

Synthetic linear polyesters of low intrinsic viscosity containing finely divided dispersed pigment are prepared by adding the pigment to the starting materials for a linear polyester, polymerizing these to a relatively high viscosity, and then rapidly reducing the viscosity of the polyester to the required value, whereby there is no significant change in the degree of dispersion of the pigment in the polymer. The exemplified materials are polyethylene terephthalate and carbon black. The usual intrinsic viscosity of 0.60 to 0.70 is reduced quickly to the required value of 0.35 to 0.55 by the addition of a depolymerizing agent, e.g. glycol. Alternative depolymerizing agents are ethylene terephthalate monomer and steam.
