A unit for converting felled timber into shorter lengths comprises a carrier 2 for a portable chain or band saw mounted upon a support 5 and displaceable about axes arranged substantially at right angles to one another. The carrier consists of two parts 7, 8 which are joined at one side by a hinge 9 and at the other side by a screw 10 and is provided with brackets 34 for supporting the saw. The carrier is mounted for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis on an arm 12 which, in turn, is mounted for pivotal movement about a vertical post 6, the arm being supported by a collar which is adjustable vertically on the arm. A stop 3 limits rotation of the carrier about the arm to 180 degrees. The post 6 is upstanding from the support 5 which comprises a pair of members 16, 17 secured at their intersection, the members forming four legs, three of which have adjustable feet. The support is provided with a stop 19 adjacent a vertically disposed roller 20 against which the timber is urged as it is fed over a horizontal roller 21 inclined to the direction of travel of the timber. The unit also has separate rollers 22 mounted on bases 24 for feeding the timber on to the roller 21, a pivoted lever 18 being provided to lift the timber on to roller 21 if necessary. Each of the rollers has a ramp 25 for rolling the timber on to the rollers. A measuring rack 23 is connectible by links 26 to the support 5 and has a frame which is supported on feet 35 and is provided with a number of rollers 27. The timber is fed between fences 31 on the rack to a position determined by an adjustable stop 28 in the form of a roller 30. In use, the saw is mounted in the carrier and is swung about the arm 12 and the post 6 to an inoperative position while the timber is rolled up the ramps 25 on to the rollers 22 from which it is passed over roller 21, which urges it towards the roller 20 and stop 19 until it abuts the stop 28. The saw is then swung about the post to a position above the timber and then swung about the arm 12 to cut the timber. The saw may be used to cut other material such as boards made of sawdust and chips compounded with resin, synthetic resin material, such as expanded polyurethane or polypropylene, or copper or brass tubing.
