Abstract

1,049,238. Welding by fusion; making tubes or rollers. BENTHAM BROS. & CO. Ltd. Aug. 6, 1965 [Sept. 22, 1964], No. 38700/64. Headings B3A and B3R. A metal tube L, Fig. 1 (not shown), is made by using a contractible die A to constrain a bent strip to exact conformity with a mandrel G pulling or pushing the die A along the length of the tube L and tack welding or otherwise uniting the edges at short intervals adjacent the die A. The die A has a brass liner B and is split and contractible by a bolt E. A plate K engages the die A and is driven by spaced threaded rods I to push the die A along the tube L. Alternatively, the plate K may be pulled by hauling tackle or driven by fluid pressure means. The same plate K may be used with dies A of different size. The joint is completed by seam welding. In this way a stainless steel tube for use as the barrel of a fabricated textile or other roller may be produced.
