Abstract

Compositions obtained by reaction of a fusible aminoplast with castor oil together with a cross-linking agent which is a polyepoxide based on epichlorhydrin and bisphenol A in the presence of (and modified with) an aromatic monocarboxylic acid are useful as solvent-free lacquers. Preferably reaction is effected in two stages, the aminoplast and castor oil being reacted in the first stage in solution in a solvent, e.g. butanol, which is removed by vacuum distillation before the polyepoxide and acid are added for the second stage. Specified aminoplasts are hexa-methylol- or -methoxy-melamine and urea or benzoguanamine -formaldehyde condensates. Specified acids are benzoic and p-t-butyl benzoic. In the examples the polyepoxide has an epoxy value of 0.55 and a molecular weight of 400.
