Abstract

A process for cracking at least one paraffin containing at least 2 and not more than 15 carbon atoms, conducted in the presence of at least one homogeneous initiator which is an olefinic hydrocarbon having in the molecule a carbon to carbon single bond in a position beta to the double bond or an alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon having in the molecule a carbon to carbon single bond in a position beta to the aromatic ring, said beta position being between the alpha and beta carbon atoms away from the double bond or aromatic nucleus, the cracking operation being conducted under conditions such that said single bond is cleaved, to generate a free methyl or ethyl radical serving as initiator for the cracking process, said paraffin cracking process producing lower molecular weight hydrocarbons. The paraffin is preferably ethane, propane, n or iso-butane or n or iso-pentane and homogeneous initiators include 1-butene; 2-pentene; 4-methyl-2-pentene; 2-methyl - 2 - pentene 3 - methyl - 2 pentane ethyl-benzene; cumene; o, m and p-cymene; diisopropyl benzene; diethyl benzene; methyl-ethyl benzene; n-propyl benzene, n-propyl-toluene, sec.-butyl benzene and di-n-propyl benzene; other initiators are also specified. In a preferred process, propane is cracked to produce ethylene and propylene is presence of an initiator and steam in amounts varying from 5:1 to 2:1 moles of steam per mole of propane, at 600 DEG to 1000 DEG C. for a time of 0.005 to 0.5 seconds.
