Abstract

1,048,978. Moulding shoe inlays. SCHOLL MFG. CO. Ltd. June 13, 1963 [June 13, 1962], No. 23676/63. Heading B5A. [Also in Division A3] An insert for a shoe e.g. a foot arch support comprises a main body of a mouldable composition moulded to fit the shape of the plantar surface of a foot, and a resilient stiffening member 5 embedded in the composition in the region of the arch of the foot. The insert is made by placing a layer 4 of the thermosetting mouldable composition in a mould 2, placing the stiffener 5 on this layer then adding a further layer 7 of the composition, pressing these layers together with a die 8 or a human foot and then heating the mould to set the composition, the composition being such that it will not deform during the heating and setting of the composition. A suitable composition comprises particles of an emulsion polymerized polyvinyl chloride or vinyl chloride copolymer dispersed in a liquid plasticizer in which the resin is insoluble at ambient or moulding temperatures but which is capable of solvating the resin at elevated temperatures in combination with a gelling agent e.g. aminated bentonite or silica aerogel, and from 10% to 50% (by weight of the resin) of cork particles. The stiffener 5 may be metal e.g. brass, steel or aluminium and may have apertures through which the composition flows. The completed inset may be covered with a piece of smooth leather (not shown).
