Abstract
Shaped articles of polystyrene foam containing at least 10% of a filler of average grain size 1-50 microns may be produced by mixing polystyrene containing 2-6% of a vaporizable blowing agent with the filler, shaping the mixture in a press at a final temperature such that the extruded article has a density less than half that of the same material in the non-porous state, cooling the article to room temperature, and subsequently further expanding it by heating. The grain size of the filler is preferably 1-20 microns, and the amount 10-100% by weight of the polystyrene. The blowing agent may be an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon or mixture of such hydrocarbons with a boiling point of 0-100 DEG C. In the process a mixture of polystyrene granules having a high content of blowing agent with granules having a low content of or no blowing agent may be used. The shaped articles may be subjected to a plurality of successive expansion by alternate heating and cooling. Specified fillers are thermostable and insoluble in polystyrene and include inorganic colourless pigments such as anhydrite, alumina, burnt magnesia, talc, fuller's earth, kieselguhr, silica gel, TiO2, kaolin, bentonite and asbestos flour; coloured inorganic pigments such as iron oxide, carbon black and chrome yellow; and coloured organic pigments such as the phthalocyanines and the vat dyes of the anthraquinone series. The use of mixtures of Sb2O3 with chloroparaffins or with polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride or chlorinated polyvinyl chloride renders the product flameproof. Materials such as iron oxide or graphite give an electrically conducting product. In examples the blowing agent is pentane.
