Abstract

1,048,704. Mines. W. S. ROW. April 8, 1965 [Feb. 15, 1965], No. 14903/65. Heading E1F. A method of forming a rigid mass in a mine opening 2 comprises filling the opening with back-fill material and passing a reactive fluid through the material to harden and cement it. The opening is filled with sulphide-containing material, moisture being removed by means of a drainage system in a drift 1 having concrete bulkheads 3. Air or oxygen is pumped through the material through a system 5, the progress of the resultant reaction being measured by thermocouples T whilst gases are removed through exhaust system 24. The air or oxygen may be pumped through the drainage system which may also be used to add bacteria assisting the reaction. The air or oxygen may be replaced by dilute sulphuric acid which may be pumped into the mass from below.
