Abstract

In a continuous transesterification process for the production of bis (2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate and oligomers thereof, dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol are introduced in liquid phase into a plurality of series-arranged reaction zones, each of which is surmounted by rectification means to remove methanol, each zone having a ratio of height to the diameter of a circle enclosing the same area as the average cross-section of at most 15: 1, the liquid reaction mixture being circulated upwardly through each zone and the rate of flow of reactants being adjusted so that the rate of flow of gas at the top of each zone is at most 20 litres/dr/cm.2 of cross-sectional area of the zone.
