Abstract

Compositions comprise a normally crystalline vinylidene chloride polymer consisting of 70 to 100 weight per cent of vinylidene chloride and 0 to 30 weight per cent of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated comonomer, and a fatty acid amide. Specified comonomers are vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, acrylonitrile, alkyl and aralkyl acrylates, acrylic acid, acrylamide, vinyl alkyl ethers, vinyl alkyl ketones, acrolein and allyl esters. Specified amides are palmitamide, stearamide, oleamide, behanamide and erucyl amide. The compositions may also comprise antioxidants, light stabilizers and plasticizers, e.g. dioctylphthalate and dibutyl sebacate. The compositions may be formed into shaped articles, particularly oriented, shrinkage films for packaging foodstuffs such as poultry and cheese. In an example a vinylidene chloride/vinyl chloride copolymer prepared by emulsion polymerization in the presence of potassium sulphate and sodium dihexyl sulphosuccinate is blended with magnesium oxide, dibutyl sebacate and stearamide, erucyl amide, palmitamide, oleamide and behenamide.
