Abstract
1,047,769. Rotary pumps. SOCIETE GENERALE DE MECANIQUE ET DE METALLURGIE S.A. Dec. 23, 1963 [Dec. 28, 1962], No. 50718/63. Heading F1F. A rotary pump comprises a plurality of circular plates 6 (Figs. 1 to 4, not shown) lodged within a flexible tubular sheath 7, each plate being provided with a rectangular aperture 8 at its centre in sliding engagement with a rotatable helical driving-shaft 10. The body of the pump includes inlet and outlet chambers 2, 3 at opposite ends of a cylinder 1 whose inner surface has a profile in crosssection which comprises two semi-circular portions with two straight portions of length c therebetween, said length being equal to the eccentricity of the cross-section of the shaft 10. The diameter of each of said semi-circular portions is substantially equal to the outer diameter of the sheath 7 so as to effect sealing between the cylinder 1 and the sheath. The plates 6 are also provided with elongated apertures 9 which slidably engage with fixed rods 15 extending from one end of the pumpbody to the other whereby rotation of the shaft 10 causes the plates 6 and the sheath 7 to oscillate transversely of the cylinder 1 without rotation so as to displace fluid from the chamber 2 to the chamber 3. The helical pitch of the shaft 10 is rendered less than or equal to the length of the cylinder I to prevent direct communication between the chambers 2, 3. When the fluid to be pumped is compressible, the helical pitch of the shaft 10 may be non- uniform so as to effect compression of the fluid. Lubricant for the plates 6 and bearings 13 supporting the shaft 10 is supplied through a conduit 39. Alternatively, lubricating oil is circulated through a reservoir 42 (Fig. 5, not shown) at one end of the pump-body, and a plurality of apertures 41 in the plates 6. The shaft 10 may have a three-lobed profile in cross-section (Fig. 7, not shown); and the apertures 8 may be provided with a wearresistant lining 20 on opposite sides thereof. The plates 6 may be made of cotton-reinforced phenolic-resin material which is loaded with graphite; and the sheath 7 may be made of an oil-resistant elastomeric material with its radially outermost surface coated with a thin layer of a material e.g. P.T.F.E., chloro-sulphonated polyethylene, polytrifluoromonochloroethylene or a copolymer of fluorovinylidene and hexafluoropropylene, which is inert with respect to the fluid being pumped. The cylinder 1 may be provided with a semi-rigid lining made of e.g. hard rubber, to minimize leakage of fluid between the sheath 7 and the cylinder 1.
