1,047,727. Magnetic disc-record information stores. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 11, 1964 [Aug. 14, 1963], No. 32667/64. Heading G5R. A serial access magnetic store has, Figs. 2a, 2b, four banks of heads K1-K4 (Fig. 2a) scanning a stack of discs P, or a single bank of heads K1 (Fig. 2b) sequentially scanning partial tracks on four stacks of discs P1-P4, the heads and discs being simultaneously driven to produce successive partial trochoidal tracks and the heads being switched sequentially. In an alternative development, Fig. 5, two sets of heads K1,1 to K1,6 and K2,1 to K2,6 scan interleaved tracks, the head support also having heads (not shown) scanning a stationary record disc to provide head-switching information. The heads may be switched to record and read the tracks alternately and may be airspaced from the disc P1, Fig. 10, or foil discs P1, P2 may be urged by air-pressure towards rigidly mounted heads, Fig. 11. The choice of machine parameters and their relations to access time is discussed in some detail.
