Abstract
802,210. Magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 7, 1956 [May 21, 1955], No. 14705/55. Class 40 (2). In a magnetic record apparatus having two transducing heads having gaps in planes not greater than 45 degrees to each other, mutual inductive interference is reduced by arranging the axes of the inductive windings on two adjacent heads to be at right angles to each other. The arrangement is described with reference to an embodiment for a data storage apparatus in which two heads 1, 2 engage an identical endless track on a cylinder. In order that an immediate output of the signals, having a square waveform, may be obtained irrespective of the relative rotational position of the cylinder the signals are initially recorded by head 2 via an amplifier 14, read by head 1 and fed back via amplifier 16 and clipping circuit 17 to the head 2 which re-records them. Thus at any time the circulating data can be abstracted from the leads 18 connected to amplifier 16. In view of the very much larger signal current in head 2 it is therefore essential that inductive coupling be reduced to a minimum in order that the signals read by head 1 are not swamped.
