Abstract

In order to overcome the problem of the poor deposition of coating material which occurs at those sharp edges of articles being coated electrostatically which are not closely adjacent to other edge portions of the article an auxiliary element which is adapted to modify the electrostatic field in the vicinity of the sharp edge is positioned in close relation thereto. The auxiliary element may be metallic and connected to a potential substantially that of the article, or may comprise a metallic core with an insulating sheath the core being at the same potential as the workpiece. Semiconductor elements may also be employed. Coating material deposited on the element may be removed by means provided to scrap or wipe this material from the element, particularly when it takes the form of a travelling band of material (Figs. 8-10 not shown). The electrostatic coating means may comprise a nozzle of fluidized bed and the invention is described in relation to the coating of wire mesh, drawn sheet metal articles and flat elongate strips of metal.
