Abstract

1,047,571. Drawing. MARSHALL RICHARDS MACHINE CO. Ltd. Aug. 28, 1963 [Aug. 28, 1962], No. 32945/62. Heading B3P. A tube drawing machine comprises a drawing block 1, a horizontal swift 2 for supporting a coil of tubing during drawing, conveyer means 4 for receiving coils from the block and conveying them back to the swift, a forming table 5 between the block and the swift and forming the last station of the conveyer and a crane between the forming table and the swift adapted to receive coils from the forming table and transfer them to the swift. Associated with the forming table is a pointing machine 6. A coil of tubing on the table 5 is pointed and then transferred to the swift 2 by a crane comprising a stanchion 9 and a carriage 13 which is raised and lowered by a screw 14 driven by a reversible motor 15. An arm 16 is pivoted to the carriage and is moved between two limiting positions by a double-acting fluid cylinder 29. At the distal end of the arm 16 is mounted a coil stripper comprising four radial struts 18 and four depending arms 20. At the lower end of each arm is a pivoted finger 21 which carries a roller 22. Within the arm is a spring-loaded catch 23 through which passes a cross-pin 24 which projects on either side of the arm through elongated slots. The catch engages a shoulder 26 on the finger and locks it when it is in the horizontal position as shown in Fig. 2. In the floor of the table 5 are slots through which the fingers can pass and underneath each slot is a deflector plate 28 so that as the stripper is lowered on to the table the fingers 21 run under the coil and are then locked in the horizontal position. The crane conveys the coil to the swift and lowers it on to the floor of the swift, in which there are slots through which the fingers but not the cross-pins 24 can pass. When the cross-pins contact the floor the catches 23 are raised relative to the fingers 21, which then fall by gravity to a nearly vertical position A (shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2), so that the stripper can be withdrawn, leaving the coil on the swift. The motor 15 is controlled by limit switches which determine the upper and lower positions of the carriage and by a further limit switch actuated by a cam coupled to the fluid cylinder 29 which stops the carriage in a predetermined mid-position, since the floor of the swift 2 is usually at a higher level than the table 5.
