In a system for preventing malfunctions in a memory system, wherein, in correct operation, the occurrence of a particular state of one memory is dependent on the occurrence of a particular state in a further memory, then the latter issues a command to drive the said one memory into the particular state irrespective of the actual storage state of said one memory. In the time division multiplex exchange shown, pulse positions allocated to a call are present in the store Ua for calling subscribers' numbers and may be present in store Ub for called subscribers' numbers, or store UDB for permitting switch-through to the called subscriber or in stores UR, UBS for causing ringing signal or busy tone to be sent. If no pulse is present in Ua at any pulse position then no pulse should be present in any of the other stores. In this case an output from NEITHER-NOR-gate G12 is applied to inhibit circulation in all the stores. Likewise a pulse should not be in UDB unless there is one in Ub so inhibition is provided via gate G23. Further combinations to be prohibited are UDB with UBS, UR with UBS, UR but not UDB. In addition, UR with UBS is arranged to delete Ua, so that a fresh start may be made to the call. In the case of an interexchange call in which digits to be onward transmitted are stored in ZPS and other relevant information (e.g. trunk or calling line identity) is required to be stored in KPS, deletion from either of the stores takes place if there is no information in the other.
