[Also in Division H4] A temporary data-storage arrangement comprises a plurality of first level buffer stores each capable of storing in series a number of words which is less than the maximum possible number of words in a group of words that may be applied to a store, a lesser plurality of second level stores, even less third level stores and so on, the arrangement being that when a first level store is full, a second level store is seized and that when this is full a third level store is seized and so on and that when a word is read-out of the first level store, the words in this store are " moved-up " one position so as to fill the just-vacated storage position whereby the lower level stores are emptied as soon as possible and may thus be seized by other first level stores. The arrangement is used in an S.T.D. telephone system where a large number of stores must be provided for receiving dialled digits but wherein it would be uneconomic to provide each store with sufficient storage positions to hold the maximum possible number of digits that may be dialled by a subscriber. Consequently the first level stores have just sufficient storage positions for storing digits in respect of local calls, the lower level stores being seized as required in respect of trunk calls.
