In a translator which works both ways devices AZ, UM emit successively pairs of words which are translations of each other. These words are fed to comparators RB, AB which are fed over leads E1,1 . . . E1,12 with words to be translated and when identity is established say in RB gate AE1 conducts to open DS1 . . . DS12 to emit the translation to St. Likewise identity in AB opens DS<SP>1</SP>1 . . . DS<SP>1</SP>12 via AE2 to emit the translation to St. It is to be noted that RB is used for translation from AZ words to UM words and AB for translation in the reverse direction. A signal on E2 indicates that translation in the former direction is required, this signal enabling AE1 and disabling AE2. Absence of such a signal enables AE2 and disables AE1. As described AZ is a counter and emits subscribers equipment numbers, and UM is a magnetic core store addressed by UM to read out the corresponding directory number. UM may also read out other information such as class of service, break-in priority, busy or idle condition . . . which may be gated out via DS under control of either or both of the comparators.
