Abstract

<PICT:1046962/C1/1> A gypsum calciner comprises a rotary assembly including concentric cylinders 1, 2 (Fig. 1), gypsum being passed, in countercurrent to air and combustion gases, through a path including the annular space between the cylinders, and the inner cylinder, the assembly having controllable exits for example 9, 18, at different positions for removal of calcined gypsum of different grades. Gypsum minerals entering at 12 (Fig. 3, not shown) drop into the space between the widened ends 4, 5 of cylinders 1 and 2 and vanes or ribs 19 and 20 move the material along downwardly sloping cylinder 1. Inclined vanes 21 lift the material into cylinder 2 and vanes 22, 23 transport it towards the widened end 5 of cylinder 2. The material passes through aperture 15 into combustion chamber 6 heated by a device for example an oil burner or pulverised coal burner in casing 26. Material not removed by adjustable apertures 8, 18 leaves the calciner at 24. Combustion gases leave at 11.
