Bottles are carried by an endless conveyer through a number of soaker compartments 12, separated by partitions 13, in which labels and other solid material are removed and collected in open-ended trough-shaped collectors 26, each of which extends between conveyer wheels 21. Washing solution is circulated in each collector 26 by offset nozzles 37, 39 supplied with washing solution by a pump 31 via pipe lines 30, 33, 35 and 38, and the pump inlet is connected, via a label &c. separator 50, to a return main 43. The bottom area of each compartment is also given a solution circulating effect by nozzles 40, 41 fed from pipes 35. Each compartment has a washing solution return line 45 connected adjacent its base, and a line 46 which draws labels and washing solution from the collector 26. The labels and solution are drawn by the pump into the label separator 50 which incorporates a motor which lifts the labels and other solids upwardly in a perforated screen to a discharge at 56, and the washing solution is drained through the screen to pass to the pump inlet for recirculation. Control valves 49 and 34 enable one or more compartments to be disconnected, from the label separating mechanism. The bottles are carried in pockets arranged in lines extending between opposed conveyer chains, and laterally spaced guides 25 hold the bottles in position during their travel. In a modification, instead of conveyer wheels 21 at the ends of the collectors, the opposed conveyer chains pass over fixed part-circular guides which provide unobstructed openings at the collector ends.
