Heading F4B. Sulphide ore, limestone or cement raw materials in the form of small pellets fall through a preheater a before being burnt in a grateless fluidized bed b and then fall through a cooler c, air passing up the apparatus in counter flow. A burner 10 delivers into the fluidized bed b which is of less cross-section than the preheater or cooler. A passage 6 withdraws some of the hot gases from the bed and delivers them to a free slope of the pellets or below a grid in the preheater. The preheater may be connected to the fluidized bed by a bend 2 so that a free slope of pellets is formed, the fluidized bed reactor feeding the cooler directly, and a flow control gate may be interposed in the free surface of the slope.
