Abstract

1,046,465. Rotary compressors. B. ZIMMERN. May 7, 1963 [May 8, 1962], No. 18025/63. Heading F1F. A rotary gas-compressor of the worm and worm-wheel type comprises a casing containing a worm or screw which has a plurality of screwthreads whose crests lie on a straight line and meshes with a plurality of worm-wheels or pinions, sealing thereof being effected by a liquid, e.g. water, injected into said casing. In one embodiment, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), a screw la or 1b has a tapering configuration and meshes with a pair of pinions having either parallel-sided teeth 21, 24, 27 or inwardlytapering teeth 31, 32. In another embodiment Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the screw 1c has a cylindrical shape and sealing liquid is collected in a groove 34 adjacent the high-pressure end of the screw, said liquid being returned to the low-pressure end of the screw through a pipe 35. A sealing ring 37 is pressed against the highpressure end of the screw by springs 38 to prevent said liquid entering a bearing 45 for the screw. In yet another embodiment, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the screw 1e has a disc-like configuration and spiral threads 81, 82, 83 formed on both sides thereof so as to engage with two pairs of pinions 62, 63, 64 mounted on end covers 54, 55 of a casing 76, sealing liquid being injected into the casing through pipes 65 ... 68. A gas inlet 58 and the peripheral wall of the casing form a vortex chamber from which gas enters the spaces between the threads, compressed gas being ejected at the centre of the screw through branched pipes 71, 74 attached to the end covers 54, 55.
