Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:1046417/C2/1> wherein R1 is a C4 to C24 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, Q is a hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon group substituted by at least one quaternary ammonium nitrogen atom carrying a positive charge, R1 is a C1 to C14 alkylene radical, R11 is a hydrogen atom or a C1 to C24 alkyl radical, R111 is a hydrogen atom or a C1 to C4 alkyl radical, and X is a salt-forming anion, said compound containing at least one aliphatic C8 to C24 hydrocarbon radical. Specified substituent other than the quaternary ammonium atom in Q are hydroxy groups and halogen atoms and specified Q radicals are <FORM:1046417/C2/2> wherein R2, R3 and R4 are the same or different and each is a C1-C24 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or the radical <FORM:1046417/C2/3> and R5 is a divalent C1 to C10 aliphatic radical. The compounds of the invention may be prepared by reacting an amide of the formula [R1-(Q)+-R1CONHR11]X- with an aldehyde of the formula OHCR111.ALSO:Cellulosic materials are rendered resistant to or immune from biotic attack by impregnation with a solution of a compound of the general formula <FORM:1046417/A5-A6/1> wherein R1 is a C4 to C24 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, Q is a hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon group substituted by at least one quaternary ammonium nitrogen atom carrying a positive charge, R1 is a C1-C14 alkylene radical, R11 is a hydrogen or a C1 to C24 alkyl radical, R111 is a hydrogen atom or a C1 to C4 alkyl radical, and X is a salt forming anion, said compound containing at least one C8 to C24 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical. Specified solvents for said solution are water, alcohol, alcohol/water, ketone, ketone/water, chlorinated organic solvent, dimethyl-sulphoxide, and dimethylformamide. The cellulosic material may subsequent to impregnation be dried and the compound of the above formula fixed on the material at an elevated temperature.
