Abstract
A polyamide is prepared by reacting a polyamine with an adduct of (a) a mixture of fatty compounds containing, as the major component, a mixture of free or combined positional or geometrical isomers of conjugated polyunsaturated fatty acids, or amides or esters thereof, and in addition other conjugated or non-conjugated unsaturated fatty acids or amides or esters thereof and (b) an amount of acrylic acid or an alkyl acrylate equivalent to the conjugated diene content of (a). Polyamines specified are ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, and penta-ethylene hexamine. The fatty compounds may be dehydrated castor oil acids, e.g. linoleic acid, or may be produced by isomerization, catalysed by sulphur or alkali, of sunflower oil or soya oil. The adduct may be formed in the presence of up to 20% of another dibasic acid, e.g. adipic, sebacic, azelaic or phthalic acid or up to 50% of a mono-carboxylic acid, preferably containing 6-18 carbon atoms, e.g. oleic or palmitic acid. The polyamide produced may be a liquid or a solid and may be mixed with an epoxy-resin, applied in a coating to a substrate, allowed to dry and optionally heated to cure the epoxy-resin. In Example (1) 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol is mixed with isomerized sunflower oil and a stoichiometric excess of acrylic acid, the excess acid being recovered as methyl ester by distillation after the adduct is formed. In another example a bisphenol A/epichlorohydrin condensate dissolved in a methyl isobutyl ketone/xylene /ethylene glycol monoethylether/ethylene glycol monoisopropyl ether mixture is mixed with a xylene/ethylene glycol monoethyl ester solution of a polyamide and heated to cure.ALSO:Aluminium panels and tin plate are coated by dipping with a solution of an epoxy-resin and a polyamide curing agent in an organic solvent and the coating dried by heating. In Examples, an epoxy-resin derived from bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin is used in conjunction with a polyamide derived from an adduct of acrylic acid and soyabean or sunflower oil together with a polyamine, e.g. ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, trethylene tetramine and/or penta-ethylene hexamine and optionally phthalic, palmitric, oleic and/or adipic acid. Solvents are methyl isobutyl ketone nylene, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and ethylene glycol mono-isopropyl ether.
