Abstract

Steel panels which may have been pre-treated with zinc phosphate are anodically coated by electro-phoresis from an aqueous solution comprising an amine salt of an adduct of maleic anhydride and an epoxide ester resin formed by esterifying a diglycidyl ether of a dihydric phenol, with an unsaturated acid derived from a fatty oil, e.g. castor, tall or linseed oil, and optionally also a saturated or aromatic acid. Prior to esterification, the epoxide resin may itself be treated with a monohydric phenol to form a partial ether. If desired a drying or semi-drying oil, e.g. soya bean, linseed, tall, sunflower, safflower or dehydrated castor oil, or an unsaturated hydrocarbon resin or a copolymer thereof e.g. dicyclopentadiene-isoprene copolymer, may be included in the adduct. The aqueous coating compositions may also contain pigments, organic solvents and aminoplasts e.g. methylated methylol melamine resin. The coatings are cured by baking.ALSO:Heat curable adducts are produced by substantially fully esterifying an epoxy resin which is a diglycidyl ether of a dihydric phenol and has a molecular weight below 700 or an ether thereof with a phenol, with an unsaturated acid having 11 to 24 carbon atoms in the molecule and derived from a fatty oil, possibly together with a saturated or aromatic acid, and reacting the ester so produced with sufficient maleic anhydride to obtain without gel formation an adduct containing at least 5 wt. per cent of combined maleic anhydride. The adducts may be modified by the presence during the addition of drying or semi-drying oils, unsaturated hydrocarbon resins and copolymers thereof. The adducts may be rendered water reducible by reaction with an amine in water, possibly after preliminary hydrolysis of the anhydride groups. The aqueous solutions of the amine salts of the adducts may contain water-soluble aminoplasts, pigments and organic solvents and are useful as coating compositions.ALSO:Coatings on substrate, such as zinc phosphate treated steel panels, are formed by applying a composition which is an aqueous solution comprising an amine salt of an adduct of maleic anhydride, together, if desired, with a drying or semi-drying oil or an unsaturated hydrocarbon resin or a copolymer thereof and an ester of a diglycidyl ether of a dihydric phenol, or a partial ether thereof with a phenol, and an unsaturated acid together, if desired, with a saturated or aromatic acid (see Division C3) and curing the coating by baking. The aqueous compositions may also contain pigments, organic solvents and aminoplasts. Specified methods of applying the compositions are spraying, brushing, dipping and roller coating.
