Abstract

In a cathode-ray tube symbol display arrangement of the kind in which the symbols are produced by the impingement on the tube screen of a plurality of electron beams selectively controlled by a matrix forming part of the tube gun so that each symbol is made up of a number of simultaneously produced individual dots, uniformity of dot brightness is enhanced by switching " ON " the electron beams with maximum permissible beam current for a fraction of a character cycle, i.e. for a fraction of the period during which the deflection means directs the beams to a given screen position, before " stepping-on " to the next character position. Fig. 1 shows one embodiment in which the beam current is controlled by the matrix drive amplifiers which are only energized for a short period by means of a four microsecond width pulse t derived from the timing input signals. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the matrix amplifiers are permanently energized and the beam current controlled by applying the pulse t, in inverted polarity, to the tube cathode. The brightness may also be controlled by varying the width of the pulses t.
