Abstract

1, 046, 079. Wire cables. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. April 2, 1964 [April 22, 1963], No. 13697/64. Heading D1T. [Also in Division B2] A cable, comprising stress relieved lock wires surrounding a core, has a base coating of a wire drawing aid on the lock wires and a coating over said base coating of a lubricant mixture that can resist temperatures of at least 600‹F. The base coating may be zinc phosphate; iron phosphate; borax, lime or iron oxalate and silicates. The base coating acts as a carrier for the lubricant and must be able to withstand temperatures between 600‹F. and 1100‹F. The lubricant preferably consists of between 5 and 30% by volume of molydisulphide and the remainder any of the well known wire drawing lubricants such as calcium stearate and any of the well known fillers such as lime. Alternatively, graphite, silicone, phosphates, or a mixture of potassium phosphate and sodium tetraborate may be substituted for the molydisulphide. In the figure, wires 18, having said base coating applied through a tube 22, are stranded about the wires 16 and the lubricating mixture is applied via the pipe 22 at a point before the closing die 24. From the die 24 the cable is led through a conduit 26 surrounded by an induction coil 30, the conduit having an inlet 28 for nitrogen or other inert gas. The cable is heatedby the induction coil 30 to a temperature varying between 600‹ and 1100‹F., the higher temperature being used for stainless steels. Preferably the heat treatment affects only the lock wires and key wires of the cable. A water spray 32 quenches the cable as it leave the conduit.
