Abstract

In a seal for a rotary shaft 1 and comprising an axially movable seal ring 4 sealed to the shaft casing 3 by a flexible diaphragm 10 and urged into facial sealing contact with a ring 2 fixed to the shaft by a circumferential set of juxtaposed leaf springs 6 fixed together at their outer ends and free at their inner ends, the diaphragm 10 is bonded to the springs 6 and/or the ring 4 is supported and sealed by two sets of springs 6a, 6b, Fig. 5, and associated diaphragms 10a, 10b separated by a coolant chamber 18. The diaphragms 10a, 10b may or may not be bonded to the springs 6a, 6b and cooling fluid is circulated through the chamber 18. The ring 4, Fig. 1, is carried in a carrier ring 5 and the diaphragm 10 may be bonded to the ring 5 and to an outer ring 7; the outer margins of the springs 6 being clamped between the ring 7 and a ring 8. The diaphragm is bonded to the side of the springs facing the fluid pressure to be sealed. The springs 6 may be constructed and arranged as described in the parent Specification, i.e. they may be integrally connected at their outer ends or may be separate triangular leaf springs which may be spaced by pins 9, Fig. 4 (not shown). The diaphragm may be of nitrile rubber, Neoprene, silicone rubber or the material sold under. the Trade Mark " Viton ".
