Abstract
Finely dispersed calcium silicate filler is prepared by mixing a calcium silicate of composition CaO.SiO2.H2O having a tobermorite crystal structure, with a calcium silicate of composition CaO.2-5SiO2.nH2O which is amorphous to X-rays, both calcium silicates being in a moist condition from precipitation, until a SiO2 : CaO ratio of 1.5 : 1 to 2.5 : 1 is attained, followed by filtering, washing, drying and possibly grinding. The product has the disturbed crystal structure of synthetic tobermorite and X-ray diffraction lines at 3.06, 2.79, 1.83 and 1.66 <\>rA. The CaO.SiO2.H2O may be obtained by reacting milk of lime with (a) an unaged silica sol (obtained from water glass and HCl) or (b) silicate solution with HCl or CaCl2; then heating and stirring until the mixture becomes transparent, viscosity rises, and pH falls. The amorphous calcium silicate may be obtained by reacting CaCl2 with water glass solution, e.g. Na2O.3.3SiO2 or disilicates of lower SiO2 content, using high or low shearing force; SiO2 content may be increased by HCl treatment of the water glass or the calcium silicate.
