[Also in Division F4] A passage of rectangular cross-section for freezing together articles of food is defined by the surfaces 14<SP>1</SP>, 15<SP>1</SP>, 16<SP>1</SP> , 17<SP>1</SP> of four endless belt conveyers 14, 15, 16 and 17. The sides of surfaces 14<SP>1</SP> and 16<SP>1</SP> remote from the passage are cooled by refrigerating units 10 and 11 respectively, unit 10 being divided longitudinally of the passage into a plurality of vertically movable sections 10a-10e (Fig. 1, not shown), by which pressure may be applied to the articles to be frozen. Each section is suspended by bolts 20 (Fig. 3, not shown), from an elevating platform 22 which is secured to an eccentricallymounted elevating shaft 23, each shaft being rotated by a crank-arm 24 of an hydraulicallyoperated common link rod 25. Surfaces 15<SP>1</SP> and 17<SP>1</SP> slide on guide rails 30 which can be moved inwardly or outwardly by rotation of cranks 36 and spindles 35. In operation, the conveyers are advanced in a step-wise manner, pressure being applied by surfaces 15<SP>1</SP>, 171 immediately prior to each freezing operation and by surfaces 14<SP>1</SP>, 16<SP>1</SP> during freezing. The pressure is then released, the conveyers advanced by one step and the process repeated.
