Abstract

1,045,522. Producing neutrons; particle beams. HIGH VOLTAGE ENGINEERING CORPORATION. Feb. 28, 1964 [Feb. 28, 1963], No. 8512/64. Heading G6P. In a device for forming pulsed collimated beams of neutrons, gamma-rays or charged particles, a pulsed ion beam is directed on to an inclined target surface. The beam has a periodic lateral sweep so chosen that the velocity of the point of intersection of the beam and the target surface is equal to the velocity of the emitted neutrons, gamma-rays or charged particles. When gamin-rays are formed, the intersection moves at the velocity of light. Owing to the movement of the point of impact of the ion beam in the target, damage to the latter is reduced. The incident ion beam may be either monoenergetic or velocity modulated. In the former case the incident ion beam is passed through a magnetic field to render the ion velocity vectors parallel so that the neutrons emerging from the target follow a single trajectory. In the latter case a more intense neutron pulse is formed at the target. However, the incident ions of different energies produce neutrons having different emergent directions. To neutralize this the ion beam is passed through a magnetic field which effects a lateral spread of the ion beam velocity vectors. Suitable targets are, for neutron production, beryllium, lithium and deuterium, for gamma production, aluminium, lithium, nitrogen, fluorine and chromium, and for charged particle production, lithium, nitrogen, beryllium, cadmium and bismuth.
