Abstract

Di- and/or trihaloacetic acids are partially dehalogenated by preheating the feed substance (the acids or a solution or mixture thereof, e.g. a waste product from monohaloacetic acid production), atomizing with hydrogen, passing the resulting liquid mist through a catalyst furnace containing a supported hydrogenation catalyst at 60-140 DEG C., cooling the product, separating monohaloacetic acid from gaseous constituents, and removing the latter overhead from the separator. The hydrogen may be diluted with an inert gas such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide. A Group VIII metal or mixture thereof is the preferred catalyst, prepared in situ from a salt. Examples obtain C1CH2COOH and BrCH2COOH.
