Abstract

1,045,375. Frequency modulation. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 25, 1965 [May 28, 1964], No. 22115/65. Heading H3R. A frequency modulation circuit comprises three parallel branches (a) an inverting amplifier 1 and a delay unit 4, (b) a delay unit 5 and a limiter 2, and (c) an amplitude modulator 3, the arrangement being such that the sum of the transit times in branches (a) and (b) at centre frequency is the minimum value at which the phase shift is 180 degrees and the sum of the transit times in branches (a) and (c) is the minimum value at which the phase shift is 90 degrees. It is shown that the effect of the twofeed-back paths (b) and (c) is to convert amplitude modulation supplied to modulator 3 into frequency modulation with little distortion. The delay units 4 and 5 are preferably coaxial cables, and if the path (c) includes delay or a delay unit 7, the equivalent delay should be subtracted from 4 and added to 5. The modulator 3 may be of the ring type including four semi-conductor diodes and coupled to the amplifier 1 through a transmission line transformer having bifilarly-wound air coils. The limiter 2 may comprise two diodes connected in series opposition, and the amplifier 1 may include valves (Fig. 4, not shown) or transistors (Fig. 5, not shown).
