Abstract

1,044,809. Mechanical switches, without quick action. PAINTON & CO. Ltd. March 16, 1965 [March 19, 1964], No. 11731/64. Heading H2B. A thumbwheel switch includes a rotary switching member 20 with a light-transmitting rim 21 (Figs. 5, 6, not shown) bearing markings signifying different switch positions, such markings being illuminated from behind by a light source mounted outside of and shining through the rim 21, the markings being visible through a window 8 of the front plate 5 of the switch casing 1, 4 (Fig. 1, not shown). The rim 21 is transparent or translucent, and its interior surface is toothed at 19 (Fig. 7, not shown). Rim 21 is stepped to provide a notched portion 23 of smaller radius which is engaged by a pair of spring detents 43 to locate member 20 in each switch position. Two bulbs in holders 50 provide illumination. Member 20 carries two spring-pressed bridging contacts 34 (Fig. 3, not shown) with three feet 39 movable over a printed circuit board 38. A screw 36 adjusts the pressure of each spring 32 on its contact 34. The spindle 28 of member 20 has press-fitted thereon the thumbwheel 61 (Figs. 2, 3, not shown), the casing part 3 having a recess 60 to accommodate thumbwheel 61. Casing 1 is in two metal parts 2, 3, screwed together through threaded tubular posts 4, 4<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 3, not shown) and providing a front plate 5, with window 8, and a rear plate carrying a plug connector 15. Lugs 6 receive mounting screws 7 (Figs. 1, 2, not shown), for mounting switch casing 1 in a panel.
