Abstract

1,044,767. Knot-tying machines. E. FREUDLING. June 5, 1963 [June 5,1962], No.22439/63. Heading D1C. A method of tying a reef knot comprises forming U shaped loops in one end of the thread in parallel planes, turning them through 180 degrees to form crossed loops, moving the other end through the loops and then pulling the ends apart. A strap is held by holding means 17 and passes around a package 1, between holding members 3, 5, around a holding member 15, between holding members 2 4 and the other end 14 is held on a clamping lever 79 (not shown). The holding members 2,4 and 3,5 are advanced towards each other respectively producing U shaped loops 23, 24 these processes being facilitated by the movement of the holding member 15 in the direction of arrow 25 Fig. 3 (not shown) or the clamping lever 79 in the opposite direction to allow the introduction of more thread. The holding members 4, 5 are rotated in the direction of the arrows 30, 31 respectively to form the crossed loops 32, 33 Fig. 4 (not shown). A threading means 34 is then advanced through the loops in the direction of arrow 35 (Fig. 5) to take the end of the thread 18 from the holding means 17 and this threading means is then retracted in the direction of the arrow 36 to pull the end 18 through the loops 32, 33. The holding means 2, 3 4 and 5 are then retracted and the knot is pulled tight around the holding member 15 and eventually slides off thismember and lies against the side of the package. A blade 93 (not shown) severs the end 14 of the thread or strap to the desired length.
